A chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin is called Diabetes. It typically appears in adolescence. Symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, hunger, fatigue, and blurred vision. More than 200,000 US cases per year affected by this disease.
Over 4,000 people gathered at Haymarket Park on Sunday to walk for a cure and for a healthy life. It was for the JDRF annual “One Walk” for a World without type 1 diabetes.
“So in a patient with type 1, they rely on injected insulin, or insulin infused through a pump in order to stay alive and safe,” said JDRF Lincoln Executive Director Jayne Ullstrom.
Currently, there is nothing you can do to prevent type 1-and it strikes kids and even adults suddenly.
“Every day I come to work hoping to put myself out of a job. You can’t help but just be touched by these families and their stories and what they go through,” said Ullstrom.
Before the walk, people put on temporary tattoos, face paint and jumped in bounce houses. Dozens of teams sported bright t-shirts representing someone with type 1. One of those teams was “Kolt’s Compound”, and they were 75 people strong.
“Kolt was diagnosed five years ago today or this week, and he has been doing it for five years and we are just raising money to help try to find a cure for these kids out here so that they don’t have to live with the finger pricks and the dosing of insulin every day,” said participant Lee Fiddler. And although there is not yet a cure, Kolt’s Compound along with everyone else at the walk-remain hopeful.
Today all of the teams were able to raise over $215,000 from the event to fund future research to find a cure for the disease.
